Spa Review

Pampering others to the utmost state of relaxation is not a new art for Kathy Sim, Director of Spa at The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain Hotel & Spa. Her hands had the magical touch even before she stepped into the wellness industry. She says, “I was inspired by my grandmother who often asked me to massage her, after her hard day work. She always fell asleep during my massage. I loved to pamper her. It felt very good and I wanted to do the same for others as well. However, it took good 18 years to be where I am today.”

Being inspired by Dalai Lama and Mother Theresa, she has learned to adopt the quality being compassionate. She firm believes one should embrace everyday with gratitude, be contend and be happy, with these great qualities and an always learning attitude has made a steady growth in her career path.

She says, “In the 18 years, I continue to learn from different disciplines about new spa technology and the latest spa trend. I progressed from being a therapist, to training manager, spa manager, spa director and then beauty & spa course curriculum director in China and Hong Kong. I am relatively new in Bahrain just moved in here about 6-months back. However, most of our guests are sports club members who also visit the spa.  With that, I should say that the group of the Bahrainis here with the spa is concerned about their health and well-being, thus, they join the sports club.”

Growing years

I was educated in the USA with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration major in Marketing and Minor in Accounting.  I was in the Corporate from 1987 till 1995. In 1995 I did a career switch to become a therapist as being in the wellness industry has always been my passion. However, I experienced culture shock when I switched to a totally different industry.  I persevered and continue to do so till today.

I am a Buddhist and Buddhism practices compassion. Being a Buddhist helps me to overcome obstacles during the switching as it was really tough.  Thereafter, I moved to the product training company, manager in the spa operation and eventually moved onto the management level in the spa industry. I manage, train and educate therapists in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, South African, China and Hong Kong.

Before coming to Bahrain, I was in China – Beijing and Hong Kong for a few years. Being able to move to the different countries helped me understand the different needs in the different regions. It definitely helps me with the understanding of the importance of localization/customization to design programs based on the demographic factors for maximum result.

The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain Hotel & Spa is best known for its customized treatment to serve individual needs. There is State of the Art Thalasso Pool, exclusively ladies Spa and ladies gym. Our premium products treatment is Natura Bisse and aromatherapy to promote well-being. My vision for the Spa is to make it the best spa in the Middle East Region. And we are also planning to introduce holistic approach and new treatments that will suit the Bahrainis.
